I’m an Electrical and Electronic Engineer from Cape Town, South Africa who’s trying to live a fulfilled life by balancing quality time with family, exercise and doing things that I find difficult in my professional career. A positive side effect of this is that I keep up with industry trends and new innovations, while furthering my knowledge from a technical perspective. I consider myself fortunate to be able to live in the Western Cape and having access to mountains, the Cape Winelands and nature reserves… it really does wonders for managing your stress levels, creativity and just thinking through problems.
Throughout my studies I always said I'd start my own business straight out of university. Fortunately, I didn't. After spending six months building a crypto trading bot and making a few bucks, my naive self got quickly put in his place once I started working. After completing my Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, I joined Divigraph (Pty) Ltd as an Electronic Design Engineer under the two founders, Shaun and Farid. They are the most knowledgeable engineers I've met to this day.
Divigraph was a startup whom manufactured compact vibration sensors and other products for explosive atmospheres. One of my responsibilities was to design embedded systems that won’t explode in an explosive environment. Under Shaun and Farid’s guidance, I picked up a huge amount of knowledge and niche know-how. I learned how to take a product from concept to prototype, through certification to manufacturing. The hardware, the firmware, the regulatory pathways for global market access, the quality systems, and the commercial realities that determine whether something actually ships. The kind of knowledge you accumulate through iteration and failure, not coursework or prompting LLMs.
Eventually Divigraph got acquired by Baker Hughes, I became a dad and after some considerable career growth within the Baker Hughes’s corporate structure, I decided it was time for me to take the leap towards my dreams of starting my own company, and Prickly Pear Engineering was born. The main focus of Prickly Pear Engineering is to help our clients access new markets, with a high-barrier to entry, specifically industrial environments and explosive atmospheres.
I'm a health-oriented individual and prioritise exercise and healthy habits. My exercises of choice are running, boxing, lifting weights and hiking. Recently I've been investing in a more regular sleeping schedule. I'm also a sucker for technology and keep up with the latest innovations in health wearables and cars specifically.
This website exists because I got tired of platforms that reward performance over competence. I made it to give more insight into who I am, the work I do, the tools I use, and the things I'm passionate about
